There’s something to be said for a solid, rugged racecar – when you’re on the track, that is. These days, thoroughbred sports car and being domesticated to become more daily-driver-friendly and less harsh on the highways. The 2016 Ford Mustang muscle car is of these vehicles that receives a bit more road manners than its predecessors.

This stallion is hardly tamed, but it does deliver a more refined ride thanks to the replacement of the solid rear axle with an independent rear suspension (IRS). It makes the Mustang feel more surefooted around corners, as well as less bouncy in general. As opposed to beam axles in the traditional Mustang, this IRS redesign makes it so that what one wheel feels (like a pothole), the others do not. This improves handling and ride quality – and it doesn’t sacrifice any of the power or driver engagement you expect from this pony car.
