Paper, plastic, metal... you know what types of household items can be recycled. But what parts of your car can be recycled?

Since 2003, the Ford Core Recovery Program has been collecting damaged car parts, like windshield wiper motors and fuel injectors, from Ford service centers at dealerships nation-wide.

According to Ford, about 85 percent of an entire vehicle can be recycled -- and Ford is working to increase this number.

Boosting recyclability can be achieved by making new cars out of more recyclable materials, or from learning how to recycle the materials cars are already made of. For instance, a huge advance in Ford's recycling program came in 2010, when the company began processing bumpers and headlights.

"These bumpers are typically between five and six feet long and can yield as much as 20 pounds of material after they have been processed," said Kim Goering, Ford Remanufacturing Manager. "That adds up fast and makes it pretty easy to see how much of an impact the program makes—and with just one category."

Since the program's inception over a decade ago, it has processed over 120 million pounds of vehicle parts for re-use, and kept them out of landfills.
